What you want is not identical with what makes you happy. Though the article doesn't mention it, the scary thing is that as technology for delivering what you want becomes more refined, the two may *increasingly* diverge.https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2019-05-01/what-we-want-doesn-t-always-make-us-happy …

It may be inevitable that in the limit case, what you want and what makes you happy diverge completely, simply because x can be optimized more effectively if you're not also trying to optimize some orthogonal y.

If so, we'll need (and we'll surely develop) social antibodies to protect us. E.g. we'll have to teach kids explicitly to avoid the kind of things you want, but don't make you happy.

Parents already warn kids about drugs, but few realize yet that this is just one instance of a more general lesson.

Hard to say how it plays out in the long term. Do we end up with a society that's 95% addicts and 5% people who understand the danger and resist it? Or does it play out like smoking, where the addiction spreads wildly at first, then shrinks?

The good news is, if we establish a general antibody against things you want that don't make you happy, it will work against many different smokings simultaneously. The bad news is that it will need to.

Might depend on how strongly the drug affects the ability to think clearly. While smoking you can still think clearly, while on heroin not so much

I think we just intrinsically value short-term happiness more than long-term happiness. We evolved that response in light of our ephemeral lives with danger lurking in every corner. It was only recently that we were able to minimize immediate threats & prolong lifespan.

A difference from smoking: new sources of addiction (e.g. social media) send signals to their creators about how to make the product more addictive for each user. Like a cigarette that beamed back what ingredients most addict you, and you then received that custom addictive cig

Everything I've seen indicates addiction is a stable % of population. It's not infectious.https://www.drugabuse.gov/publications/drugfacts/nationwide-trends …

Coming from the UK and in particular living in London, but now having lived in Europe, I notice a marked difference in the way the Europeans deal with “wants” and “happiness” placing the second way above the first.
