Getting tired of this complainy startup victim mentality. We are the world's most important, powerful, interesting industry. Let's act from a position of strength: YES, criticize us because it's natural to question power. Let's fix it by doing the right thing, not by whining.https://twitter.com/paulg/status/1134058742910246912 …

When a startup is small, it seems cute and the press writes encouragingly about it. When it reaches the size where they can get attention by attacking it, they do that instead.

Much criticism of founders in the press is questioning power in the same way that Fox News' coverage of immigration is questioning immigration policy. (I.e. actually merely pandering to their audience's existing biases.)

Yup. Paul, do you -- or I -- pander to our base any less? And if this is how the world works, are we complaining about it or fixing it? I'd rather deal with it by addressing valid criticisms and ignoring others -- by getting curious about what's true in an otherwise-unfair thing.

I don't know about you, but I try not to pander to anyone. You can't safely lie to founders who'll act on your advice, or it might cause them to fail.

Pandering doesn't necessitate falsehood, though, so not sure about this?

I think we're at the edge of words here, but the kind of pandering that matters, and the kind I meant when I first used the word, is the lying kind.

I doubt many people *try* to pander, other than maybe Mr. Orange Hair. The issue is more that it's so psychologically satisfying to have people applauding what you say than challenging you, that many people gravitate toward pandering unless they check it.

Paul just blocks people who don't applaud. To each his own you know?

Also, nobody is suggesting anyone here is *lying* -- which implies intentional deceit. Nor, I think, were you giving advice in this case?

My view on advice is I try to avoid giving it because I've found almost all advice is autobiographical: either the person is justifying their own choices or living through you. Circumstances differ so much that hypotheses, or sharing experiences, works for me more than "advice."

From experience as a founder, I prefer to hear experiences and then a pro/con discussion.

I'm trying to name the truth in what you're saying -- e.g., that press may unfairly attack startups -- and find a solve (listening to valid stuff, ignoring the rest). I want to believe you're trying to do the same (for me, or in general when folks criticize you or our industry).
