When a startup is small, it seems cute and the press writes encouragingly about it. When it reaches the size where they can get attention by attacking it, they do that instead.

I agree that most stories in any field portray people as cartoons but that's a separate issue from the reality of a plucky lil founder facing decisions that have mass scale EXTRINSIC impact and big money at stake. That it's the same person is irrelevant when the context changes.
