Getting tired of this complainy startup victim mentality. We are the world's most important, powerful, interesting industry. Let's act from a position of strength: YES, criticize us because it's natural to question power. Let's fix it by doing the right thing, not by whining.https://twitter.com/paulg/status/1134058742910246912 …

Both of you are correct.

Yup. Paul, do you -- or I -- pander to our base any less? And if this is how the world works, are we complaining about it or fixing it? I'd rather deal with it by addressing valid criticisms and ignoring others -- by getting curious about what's true in an otherwise-unfair thing.

I liked, un-liked and liked this post, just so I could like it twice.

I prefer the optimistic take on this. When a startup is small there isn't much to criticize. It's like scolding a baby. However, "adult startups" deserve scrutiny. And all successful startups get lots of praise too. Some people may be more attuned to the criticism.

Except larger startups have millions to defend themselves against bad press. Have any startups walked thousands of miles with almost no assets in search of a better life? No. I'd love to found a startup, but I hope I never tweet anything this tone deaf.

The platforms that we technologists built give 100x leverage to memes that propagate via cognitive biases. This simultaneously amplifies and stabilizes the dynamic you describe. Don't we need to feel the heat if we want to avoid the same mistakes in the future?

Paul, is your response to being criticised, to compare startup owners to kids being separated from their parents and put in cages?
-
Because I think that misses Roy's point, that the *power* of the press to disrupt and affect successful startups is minimal, and is speaking truth to *power*. With "Fox News" and "immigrants", immigrants are not "in a position of strength". They are in cages.
