A startup that helps people make money will make money itself. Both Viaweb and Y Combinator did this. And so do Airbnb and Stripe. It's not the only recipe for a startup, but it's a good one.

One of the best ways to help people make money is to unlock something valuable they already have. Airbnb and Y Combinator and Lambda School are all of this type.

A really big startup I've been waiting for for over a decade is the one that gives moms at home with kids a way to make money. There is massive untapped talent there, if someone can figure out how to unlock it.

That's the difficult part. Although I agree execution is the main factor affecting the success, what the startup is working on is also important. I remember your article to be wary of "sitcom" ideas. The best team in the world can't make a pet owners social network fly.

Warehouse/machinery that is underutilized(say 30% occupancy/year) can be unlocked, fragmented (much like co-working space), and given away on rental basis in uberized fashion. Similar problem with wedding banquets where large blocks of real estate are locked up.
