One thing I didn't realize before I had kids is how many photos of eager, smiling kids had a parent out of the frame doing something ridiculous to make them laugh.

Less sardonically, some of the most impressive acting skills I've ever seen were the staff at Disney accompanying costumed characters, who simultaneously were getting kids to smile for photos without taking attention from the characters.

When my kids were smaller, all I had to do was point the camera at them, and then say "OWWWWW!" like something had hurt me. The little sadists would laugh, and then I grabbed the shot.
