When a startup is small, it seems cute and the press writes encouragingly about it. When it reaches the size where they can get attention by attacking it, they do that instead.

The founders, who've been the same people all along, find their personas have been switched from "plucky young founder trying to make new idea work" to "evil plutocrat bent on destroying the world." Whatever people can get attention by portraying you as, you'll be portrayed as.

I don't think that's quite right -- as you gain power, you gain critics and judges. It is correct to question power.

Of course. But if you look at the sort of things people write, it goes beyond questioning. Many journalists write starting from the assumption someone as rich as Bezos or Zuck must be a bad person.

At that level you are a major public figure. Comes with the territory, does it not? Maybe the flaw here is that we're not teaching people about this so they're suddenly unprepared for being notable figures, or even public figures at the extreme ends.

What comes with the territory is readers' appetite for attacks on prominent people. Reporters choose whether or not to use that. There are plenty of upstanding journalists, like e.g. Steven Levy, who don't descend to this sort of facile linkbait.

Steven Levy is a very niche journalist. He targets one or two areas of humanity (read tech) beautifully. But he rightfully, does not write about other spheres of life, where personalities like Zuckerberg have a major ground to be criticized.

You really suggesting that extreme success doesn’t change people and doesn’t further influence future actions?

We have that appetite for a reason. We're counting on journalists to aggressively demand accountability from powerful people. Sorry (not sorry) it inconveniences you and your buds.
