Biographies of famous people often mention how they worked at night and on weekends, as if this were painful for them. But if you like what you do, nights and weekends are the best time to work. That's when you get those wonderful big blocks of time without interruptions.

During my 20s and early 30s I used to sleep from 3 am to 11 am. In retrospect it's now clear I did it to get time to work without distractions. I couldn't afford to buy quiet, so I got it by sleeping different hours.

There is something so magical about a lab or office at night, when it's quiet and empty and dark outside. It seems like anything is possible.

Sometimes there are a few others around, and this can be even better, because they also tend to be people who love their work (and thus are good at it), and there is an implicit rule that you mustn't interrupt one another unless it's for something really interesting.

And @paulg how does one buy quiet? Through leveraging other people? (Which is clearly costly)

"I couldn't afford to buy quiet"..I'm starting to learn that I get my best work done at night when the kids and my wife are asleep. It's the only time I get quiet and have time to myself.

When I was single, my most productive time at work was Friday evening, after the office closed. I would regularly stay at work until midnight on Fridays. Finally in the zone... the code starts to flow easily from your fingers. The last thing you want to do is stop.

Most people sleep after 2 pm nowadays. Hence friends/family end up eating your time at night. I sleep soundly between 9 pm to 5 am, gets up like a champ at 5 AM and do highly productive work for atleast 5 hrs before most ppl even get started for the day. #5AMClub

That works too. Robert Morris does that.

Small but not insignificant advantage for Israeli companies with US customers/offices: Work week in Israel is Sun through Thu, so Sunday is extremely quiet and focused, as are 9am-4pm hours during the week before US wakes up I relished that time when I lived and worked there

This is why the modern open office/coworking spaces are a disaster. Especially for small startup teams.
