One thing Viaweb and Y Combinator had in common was that there was no name for what they were when we started them. A small sample size, I know, but if there's no name for what you're building, that may be a good sign rather than a bad one.

Paul did you have a backup plan if Viaweb didn't work out of other companies to start at that time?
I must have had more than one idea, considering what a huge range of possibilities there were then and how squarely I was in the middle of everything, but I don't remember what any of the others were.

I remember those days in the 90s and the richness of the possibilities/prospects of new markets developing as a result. Success/Ideas started with knowing the world was about to change and finding peers that understood the same and discussing with them paths to build the future.

Skilled engineers can often can get a regular job after making such a bold attempt and it not working out. Other mitigation is having 1 year savings for living expense,going back to school, or relying on friends and family for support (a place to crash) if things get super bad.
