Honing your software skills in a company filled with talent also seems like a good idea. Interested in your take on the trade-off on that vs. acquiring skills on your own
Starting a company doesn't mean being on your own. If I started a company I'd make sure I recruited cofounders who were good programmers.

So how do you support yourself while trying to develop an idea and raise that first $500k? Have a part-time job, but not at a company like Google?

Not to counter your point. I agree, but if these gravity wells suck in a lot of talent, It's hard to find talented people that want to help you become good at programming. Why would they work with you if you don't already know your trade if they themselves are good programmers?
