I respect teachers and think both books and teachers have different things they do well. Coming from a small town in India I have had my share of good and bad teachers and similarly for books. My physics teacher cannot be replaced by a book. My comp sci teacher in the other hand

I learnt most of what I knew about programming by reading books and writing code on the back of used paper. If anything the teacher was giving wrong information. I still remember when I tried to correct him on array indexing how defensive he got.

who do you think writes those books?

Often professors, I realize. But it would be hard to arrange things so you were the student of more than 2 or 3 of them. And many are dead.

Perhaps it is not teachers are better than books (or vice versa). It is that they convey information in different ways. The receiver of the information must determine the optimal way they personally consume the information. If it is via books, great. If it is via teachers, great.

I understand that this moves away from your original point that you can learn from books quicker, but for some books are not the best way to consume information. Of course, if you struggle to consume information via books, you ought to improve this for yourself.
