Strange, isn't it? I encountered them myself recently and was similarly perplexed. It's so anomalous one wonders if it is some sort of campaign.
Yeah, it set off my interesting anomaly detector too. It's just too extreme to be the result of the forces that produce ordinary hating and trolling. (Little did I expect that having such close acquaintance with those forces would ever be useful...)

Someone could roughly quantify at least one theory (shorters): Plot most shorted companies by negative Twitter accounts (you'd have to define "negative Twitter account" and figure out how to get a good sample, but it's *possible*)
