Optimism is arguably a form of error, just as pessimism is. And yet it is one of the most valuable qualities you can have when undertaking ambitious projects.

How can one become more optimistic? It seems hard to cultivate directly. But optimism is contagious, so you can do it by surrounding yourself with optimistic people. This is one of the big forces driving Y Combinator, and Silicon Valley in general.

The optimism imbalance between Silicon Valley and the rest of the world makes it seem mistaken to outsiders, including most politicians and journalists. But its consistent though bumpy growth over the past 50 years shows that, paradoxically, this mistakenness works.

"optimism" is a try{} catch(e) {} . Increased optimism = increased proactive to solve the errors. Silicon Valley optimism is you sometimes throw your own errors that others can see, only to solve them

I think it's worth considering that software fails cheaply. Being optimistic about software means you get to fail many more times before you're out of the game than if you fail at, say, giving people rocket rides.

And as a corollary, software succeeds exponentially when it does. So an optimistic, spaghetti-at-the-wall approach makes much more sense in Silicon Valley.

IMHO this is the result of the fact that we see clearly what optimism generates as positive effects in the Valley, but I doubt that the negative effects are also similarly evident.
