How can one become more optimistic? It seems hard to cultivate directly. But optimism is contagious, so you can do it by surrounding yourself with optimistic people. This is one of the big forces driving Y Combinator, and Silicon Valley in general.

The optimism imbalance between Silicon Valley and the rest of the world makes it seem mistaken to outsiders, including most politicians and journalists. But its consistent though bumpy growth over the past 50 years shows that, paradoxically, this mistakenness works.

In an economy less and less dependant on physical goods which are limited by production/transportation/energy consumption, the most valuable thing a government can create is confidence.

There is more optimism in Silicon Valley beyond government support. Compare on a ground level what happens with emerging economies- “not freed from daily challenges to be optimistic “

As an optimist who lives in Johannesburg, South Africa (pessimisim dominates)... every time I visit San Francisco this pervading optimism is so vivid, visceral, infectious. Maybe if you live in it you forget about it. But to me it’s unbelievably alive.

Optimism and pessimism are rooted in identity. Change your identity and you change your perspective. While surrounding yourself with likeminded folks will help, creating new habits to shift your belief will be at the core of becoming a lasting optimist.
