How can one become more optimistic? It seems hard to cultivate directly. But optimism is contagious, so you can do it by surrounding yourself with optimistic people. This is one of the big forces driving Y Combinator, and Silicon Valley in general.

The optimism imbalance between Silicon Valley and the rest of the world makes it seem mistaken to outsiders, including most politicians and journalists. But its consistent though bumpy growth over the past 50 years shows that, paradoxically, this mistakenness works.

Similar to the "breakthroughs are made by people too inexperienced to realise it can't be done" meme? :-)

I guess this is a flaw of human biology that makes optimism desirable. Especially for ambitious projects, it takes a certain kind of person to undertake a venture that has only a 5% success chance (but if successful maximum positive impact).
-
The probability of success of a venture is also not independent of the credence in said venture of the undertaker. I suspect that an expectation of failure may increase the likelihood of failure for most people.

Do or Don’t. Black or White. Right or Wrong. We need to feel sure in order to act. I guess the trick is to be exceptionally-good at making that approximation of reality, that rounding to binary choices. Every time.
