I still *really* don't understand why there isn't a digital wallet I can just load up and use to buy single articles from any major publication on the fly, zero friction. I'm not happy with paying $50-250/year for one pie when what I clearly want is a spread of slices.

The hard part is getting started. The "major publications" will be the last to switch. You need to start with individual writers. And who knows, maybe by the time the major publications decide to switch, the individual writers will have superseded them anyway.

Someone could do this illegally quite easily. Subscribe, get customers, redistribute articles, and so on. Do you think someone who did this would get caught?
