I wrote that essay before we started YC. What I meant was, if I had two potential cofounders who were the same in every other respect but one was a mother with a newborn and one wasn't, I'd take the one who wasn't.

I used that example because it was one of the biggest distractions I could imagine. And having now had several kids, it's still one of the biggest distractions I can imagine.

And as a mother with three small kids and one due in 2 weeks, it’s devastating to hear this sentiment. I never applied for YC but now imagine it would have been part of your examination of my application.

I haven't read YC applications for 5 years, but when I did we never asked or cared about this.
