Google didn't happen in the US because the US is a big country.

I heard Michael Heseltine describe the UK's as a medium-sized economy. Beneath it seemed to be the assumption that a medium-sized country would have a medium-sized economy. But the increasing leverage of technology + the mobility of those who create it could make that false.

It would take some work to estimate x and y, but the right way to think about this question might be: If you could get the right x people to move to your country, you'd end up with y% of the world economy.

This is partly why I'm interested in City States, or at least in harnessing the phenomenon of them.

Or, if you as a smaller country re-invest in your populace via education and a social safety net and develop more "right" people than a bigger country that reserves easy access to education and general safety for the rich.

Only if they don't come empty handed or you are given credit to buy resources they could use... simplistic approaches are never adequate. Not even slightly.

Of course not. But this conversation is about the relative sizes of national economies, in which, by definition, it is.

It would seem that in SV, the biggest interest is not to draw people into it. Year after year, SV becomes less interesting for foreigners, except founders

He confused about agency and objective functions. Individuals shouldn't care about the gross size of their state, just its flourishing: is it free and prosperous? Iceland and Singapore are just fine.

Theoretically, a single person living in country X with a server farm in country Y could single-handedly tip the scales. It all comes down to what country gets the jobs and which country gets to recognize the tax gain.
