I was trying to explain to my 7 yo how powerful it is to be able to read, because you can now learn anything from books instead of waiting for teachers to teach you. When I described a shelf of books as an army of robot teachers, he started to get it.

Maybe culturally narcissistic, but I always wonder if this is what it’s like to learn English in another country - it feels like there are so many resources that would be impossible to access otherwise.

It definitely is! When I learned English as a teenager it made so many new resources to learn from accessible. Now as a software engineer it’s an absolute must.

I remember when I first leaned a fact from a book that my mom did not know, it was some trivial thing about China, but realizing that I could learn something and did not have to wait for someone else older to know it and tell me was very powerful and memorable.

When my kids tell me things I didn't know, I always make a big deal about it in order to encourage them to learn more such things.
