When people say that they're "updating" the look of something, what they usually mean in practice is making it more in line with current fashions. If the old look was classic, this actually a step backward.

100% agree. If I could buy a car that looked (and if possible, sounded) like an old american car (say, Cadillac Fleetwood -55) but with modern specs, it'd be a no brainer.

IMHO Hacker News does a job great in it's super-minimalistic way, but hardly qualifies as "with new specs" UI/UX wise... no A/C or radio for you in your new car, windows can't be rolled down, and sits are just plastic IKEA chairs glued inside ;)
