When people say that they're "updating" the look of something, what they usually mean in practice is making it more in line with current fashions. If the old look was classic, this actually a step backward.

Unless you're explicitly in the fashion business, if the best way you can describe a redesign is using words like "refresh" and "update" rather than saying you're fixing specific flaws, maybe you shouldn't do it.

What is wrong with making something in line with current fashions? I'm struggling to think of a single product in the software space that didn't benefit from this - when done right at the right time.
