When people say that they're "updating" the look of something, what they usually mean in practice is making it more in line with current fashions. If the old look was classic, this actually a step backward.

What is wrong with making something in line with current fashions? I'm struggling to think of a single product in the software space that didn't benefit from this - when done right at the right time.
-
Fashion is a kind of bias drawing you away from timelessly good design.

If you are selling anything to customers, you certainly don’t want to leave the impression that the company is ‘dated’ and does not keep up with trends. An old website would make it seem so, in my opinion.
-
Depends how sophisticated the customers are. If your customers are dolts, then you're in the fashion business. But Hacker News's minimal look seems to please its comparatively sophisticated users.

Change itself is a variable. Sometimes, not changing the stimulus/look is the same as having no stimulus/look at all - habituation.

Isn’t this like saying design doesn’t matter, or at least visual design? If you think packaging only matters in fashion then I think maybe that’s just your unique opinion
-
Exactly the opposite. Visual design matters a lot. What I'm saying is that if you can only describe a redesign using such words, then you're just making it more fashionable rather than better.

Features & solving problems are more important and have a far greater impact on customer experience than look. Redesigns and refreshes rarely improve customer experience because they often just give a new look to the same features. They solve no new problems

I’m struggling for an example of a case (website/software) where old classic design hasn’t been updated, and - more importantly - doesn’t need to be updated. Do you have one in mind?
