Unless you're explicitly in the fashion business, if the best way you can describe a redesign is using words like "refresh" and "update" rather than saying you're fixing specific flaws, maybe you shouldn't do it.

i agree, they often let a designer ruin the hard work of years past, most users hate change. look at craigslist, never been updated and is huge.

Could also be trying to fit in with the crowd, a case of groupthink. Advice is generally given by people who are unqualified to do so but suggestions etc are usually given by people who have previous experience. It's important to know the difference

The web/net is about utility. Look & feel upgrades = 99% complete waste of time if not utterly retrograde. Updating MUST mean faster, higher utility per second = only thing users want, only thing that translates into higher RPUser/session overall retention/engagement.

Aesthetics contribute to that. Beauty adds value, although perhaps not as much as making the product more useful or usable
