When I was a kid, I knew that if A hates B, he'll maltreat him. What I didn't realize till I was an adult was that if A maltreats B, he'll start to hate him. He has to to justify the maltreatment. (Psychologists call this "cognitive dissonance," but it was known long before.)

It is a classic trope in con movies that you get the mark to do you a favor (pass you the nuts at the bar) in order to make them more susceptible.

I think this is called reciprocity. A does a favour for B, B feels indebted to A so does him a favour in return. I’m sure it’s why charity junk mail includes a free pen - so you feel guilted into giving money.
