The next time someone claims that starting startups is for rich kids, remind them that Airbnb happened because its founders literally could not pay their rent.

When the goal posts of defining “rich” get moved, it’s difficult to have a decent conversation about this. I don’t disagree with your assessment at all. Safety nets mean different things to different people.

The Airbnb story is utterly anecdotal, and therefore meaningless in this context, regardless of the nuances of founders’ backgrounds. What matters is statistically meaningful evidence regarding the impact of socioeconomic background on the success of entrepreneurialism, period.

We aren’t discouraged by the truth. Why are you so defensive at hearing it? I wade through this lopsided ecosystem every day, the structural barriers are ridiculous. Holding up your one-offs and grit porn obscures the need for us to DO better to support the best ideas.

Also, ability to *start* is different than runway/privilege to keep iterating through the 1st two years. To be clear: no one owes founders runway. But anyone who says they are interested in diverse founders ought be real about the beginning of the funnel.

(1/4) As an interesting follow-up, I was added to a list “Privilege Blind” on Twitter shortly after this tweet (by someone I’ve never met). I consider myself liberal, but the hypocrisy of the left is to claim empathy yet so easily misunderstand.pic.twitter.com/nvKafek0Ye
