The next time someone claims that starting startups is for rich kids, remind them that Airbnb happened because its founders literally could not pay their rent.

I've never heard anyone say you have t be rich to do a startup, but lots say you have to be middle class at least.
-
I was listening to a
@sama interview (Conversations w/ Tyler podcast) & he mentioned - based on his/YC data - successful founders come from "upper middle class". I am no expert & don't have any data points to agree/disagree though. Just interesting to c 2 different opinions.

Dismissing how privilege and wealth shape opportunity for entrepreneurs is much more dangerous. I'm glad Brian had a decent middle-class upbringing as the son of two college graduates w/ stable jobs -- but that, unfortunately, is privilege with 40 million people in poverty in US.
-
I'm not dismissing it. I know about this problem from a decade of personal experience helping hundreds of first-time founders. What I'm disagreeing with here is the meme that you have to be upper middle class to start a startup.

Paul, I like u but
@eastdakota has been anything but offensive. he addressed nicely, whereas there’s this superiority in your tone at times. Saying this with love as it’s likely u don’t meant it Social workers can mean priviledged — priviledged to live a normal life -
Paul's ego is very fragile. Any disturbance might cause him to realize he's just been a particularly lucky investor. From there the house of cards his self esteem is built on could too easily crumble

Not sure there’s a disagreement on this thread. Wealth, privilege and safety nets can be helpful, but empirical data shows it’s not necessary to be successful.

Very true was just watching this video on Cyan Banister from Founders Fund which suggests startup/success is more about who you know and surround yourself with rather than wealth, privilege or safety netshttps://techcrunch.com/video/how-did-i-get-here-by-cyan-banister-founders-fund-disrupt-sf-2018/ …
