@paulg Do you have any advice around building a product as an internal tool for your current company, then trying to take it outside and make it a startup, or trying to go it alone from the beginning despite an obvious need in your own company?

If you know there's a need, just go straight to doing it as a startup. Then you can recruit your previous employer as a customer.

That's the kicker; I believe there's a need, but haven't made any steps towards proving it yet. There are maybe some alternatives I could use to test the general concept, but no existing solution matching what I'm thinking of.

Ask people within your company how much they'd pay for your proposed product if it existed.

Does that actually work? Would anyone have paid for the idea of Slack before it was built? I find many of my ideas solve a problem few people think to look for a solution for. The problem has been defined by more than 1, but I'm skeptic people would agree on the value of the idea

Should all ideas fit the spot where people would jump to pay for it, and no other solution exists? Seems like a rare situation. If you can see a problem most don't, and can think of a solution that would bring value, how do you communicate that value without just building it?

Probably an engineers mindset problem, now I'm reading it...
