A surprisingly large proportion of the best ideas seem to result from a thought of the form "What if you just...?" When you face a complicated problem, it might be worth explicitly asking "What is the what-if-you-just of this problem?" in case there is one.

It really works to divide a complex problem into a series of smaller known and unknown problems, and then solve for the elephant of unknown problems first.

I don't think that's a prerequisite Might help but simplifying ideas can come from anywhere Maybe even better if that person doesn't have the same limitations baked into their mental model

Often there's a good reason why you don't just X, but asking the question and working out the reason will give you a better understanding of the problem
