Was just thinking how one problem with telling lies is that you have to remember them all. Then I remembered that quite a lot of famous politicians have been known for their extraordinary memories. I'd always wondered about that. Now I may have a theory to explain it...

Trump lies all the time and has a poor memory...

Some leaders dont think it is necessary to be consistent. That assumption is no longer mandatory in todays environment

Or people who communicate voluminously about a large number of diverse activities, as keeping track of that many lies would be higher cost.

Not reliable if it gets known though, since pretending to have a bad memory seems pretty easy

I defend the idea that the majority of people have terrible memory, the difference among them is the capability to organize a system to remember it all

The powerful people are allowed to have mediocre memories and lie because nobody is double and triple checking everything that they have done.

The advantage that politicians have over just powerful individuals is that everything that they do and say is generally in public record somewhere. So their extraordinary memories are always powered by the super computer know as the media in some form.

It isn't about having great memory. It is more about having a good support team that does research and provides the prep before they face the mike. If they're not ready they won't talk much on it. There will be exceptions who are really good. But it's not the norm

I think that’s some of of the logic for why many people like politicians who seem “dumb” rather than “smart”. Regular folks assume that “dumb” politicians are more honest. Problem is politicians know this and often play “dumb”, especially the worst ones.

As long as our politicians are bought, it is not necessary to be truthful. The public is unimportant in comparison to monetary windfalls.

With the fragility of our planet, how is it possible that the GOP can mislead their base and lie to Americans about something so serious? I think the media should ignore trump’s moronic tweets and focus on pending disaster. Mind blowing.

Wei Dai's homepage includes an interesting note about a pricing game where improving a monopolists' memory decreases their return: http://www.weidai.com/monopoly-memory.txt …

Not true. Your President has a mediocre memory (despite his insistence otherwise), and constantly delivers untruths (despite his denial of doing so), yet became your President nonetheless.

knowing when someone actually has a mediocre memory versus is acting like he does is a fundamentally intractable problem. But something like this might helphttps://www.languagesoftheworld.info/language-and-mind/how-to-catch-a-russian-spy.html …

Great (accurate) memories allow for reflection upon the mistakes that you have made. Poor memory lets you rewrite your history to avoid introspection. Trump being the obvious example of this.

It it is implying that lying has a cost, that people have good memory (to remember) or that news outlets are trusted by everybody.

I've been waiting as long as I can remember for bad memory to be trendy.
