One of the most surprising things to me about PC 2.0 is how spineless universities have turned out to be. Occasional university presidents, like David Yager, stand up for principle. But mostly they capitulate to the mob.https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/11/us/ronald-sullivan-harvard.html …

it's completely consistent with people voting with their pocketbooks. This will become increasingly important if US representation fails to match the populace, e.g.https://www.economist.com/briefing/2018/07/12/americas-electoral-system-gives-the-republicans-advantages-over-democrats …

They should read about John Adams, who defended British soldiers responsible for the Boston Massacre

The idea of politicizing the right to an attorney is also deeply anti-intellectual, not to mention anti-justice. If anyone representing pariah X deserves a boycott, why not just deprive X of representation altogether.
-
In "To Kill A Mocking Bird" - the town had their mind made up that Tom Robinson was guilty, and representing him was looked down upon. I hope you can see why (from this simple fictional example), why mob justice is problematic.
-
Yep. That's precisely the point I'm making.

Ah sorry, I think I may have misread your tweet :)

3. It undermines the rights of the accused to have legal counsel.

But aren't Lawyers supposed to be unbiased about their clients and offer a "fair" trial to anyone? If you keep removing people who do things mobs/majority don't agree with that would be a very bad system to thrive in.

One thing that’s adding to the general annoyance over the lack of a spine is also that the universities (at least _these_ unis) are rich enough to not care about popular opinion.

As a residential Dean part of his job is to be a reliable confidante over accounts of sexual harassment and assault. He lives with students and his role is complex. Harvard students have been explicit abt defending due process while saying he is unfit to play this intimate role.

On one hand, seems crazy. On other, should constituents be forced on what they don’t want?

So the premise here is that Harvey Weinstein's well-comped lawyer is the victim? Weinstein probably assaulted some Harvard grads, now a Harvard dean is going to try and help him avoid consequences? Firing him, as opposed to a slap on the wrist, *was* the principled thing to do.

Let’s be clear here: they weren’t fired from professorships for their actions and viewpoints; rather their positions as house deans to undergrads— a primarily pastoral role— were not renewed. These positions ought not to be polarising

Lmao there’s so clearly more to this story. Most likely admin has disliked them for years and used this as a convenient excuse.

That said, if I was a sexual assault victim I personally would not feel comfortable going to speak to my dean about it if I knew he was representing Weinstein.

#2 seems especially striking to me, since these are teachable moments upon which a learning institution could capitalize (in this case, the principle being that in our society even the most reprehensible of us is entitled to legal representation)

I went to university in Budapest where the academy is government funded, I studied for "free" (taxes) & universities panicked about the government. =People elect authoritarians & bye-bye academic freedom! Then I studied in the UK, paid & the subject of fear was... the students

Yes, university leaders must learn not to capitalute to the mob, especially in cases when urgent responses are needed in an inciden that is going 'viral'. Easy to defer, but that could set a bad precedence for future decisions.
