I also had a football coach for a math teacher. He taught the class that all the jocks took. It was interesting how little motivation he gave them to learn math, though I agree with math teachers should better understand who good math students can become.

It's all true, but very few students are going to become research mathematicians and we don't even really have a shortage of those. As a mathematician, I think it's more important to make math interesting and engaging even for those who will never do more than use it as a tool.

I'd say the (Pasadena, California) Math Academy project's success in getting growing numbers of 8th graders through AP Calculus exams is strong evidence for the success of the coaching model.

My math teach forced me to take the SAT and apply to college. It for me a full ride. My football coach just yelled at me a lot and called me pathetic.
