i used to be jaded by Stanford undergrads. grade grubbing, partying, settling, etc. i started asking people about their ambitions and realized: students fall prey to the homogeneity of educational envs. inspire ambition in others, not complacency, and they will be ambitious.https://twitter.com/paulg/status/1126129642027536385 …

So true. Just read this little masterpiece from Robert Caro and thought it captures that ambitious cohort dynamic so well (for writing, in this case).https://www.nytimes.com/1995/05/19/books/sanctum-sanctorum-for-writers.html …

Having been through both, YC’s selection process is clearly more effective at filtering out noise Also the median Stanford undergrad becomes a banker or consultant still, but the top 1% still create great startups at a pretty unbelievable rate

A university that produces startup founders, bankers, and consultants sounds like a university that is doing its job.

Like minded people do tend to find each other regardless of the environment they are in. One fraternity at MIT had a bunch of people that went through YC and built great companies: xobni, dropbox, etc. I think finding ways to build these connections in any given env will help.
