My kids are always coming up with startup ideas. I decided the 10 yo is now old enough to hear the truth: if you want to start a startup, the thing to be doing at 10 is learning the things that will enable you to have good startup ideas at 20. How to program especially.

That's interesting. I have zero desire for any of my children to be programmers.

I don't either, if you mean in the sense of doing it as a job. But I want them to know how to program, just as I want them to know math or history.

I mean I guess in the most abstract sense that all knowledge is *somehow* useful, but my primary take on this is that everyone uses running water, but not everyone needs to know how to be a plumber.https://blog.codinghorror.com/please-dont-learn-to-code/ …

I think programming is up there with the most important sorts of knowledge, like math and the hard sciences, history, and how to write. When you look at the world, you see more if you understand these things.

I sort of think that most people arguing that everyone should be familiar with how to code are actually arguing that everyone should be familiar with formal logic. It’s just that the only place they’ve ever encountered formal logic is programming. 🤔

This is an interesting view but I am not able to see the specific incremental value of programming over foundations in math and logic. I wonder if you were exposed to programming at an age in which you'd have thought that way about *any* logically complex subject.

Perhaps programming allows you to apply logic at scale in an accessible manner, which is an important skill. That makes sense, actually.

I'm not sure it could be distinguished from math. It helps us formalize what would otherwise be loose thought. In turn it allows a practitioner to develop a more refined sense of reality. All kinds of myths fall away along the journey.

It’s just what background you come from. I am pretty sure Serena Williams would think differently.

Programming aids the applied sciences. It’s a tool that anyone studying hard science should learn. How will you build models? Regressions? Machine learning algorithms? You can’t do this stuff on paper...

I don't like about programming is 'encourage' to have a dormant lifestyle ... You need to have a rigorous structure + discipline not to fall into 'dormant' mode ... What are your ways to proactively still active 'move around' while you are heavy into coding?

I agree. And especially because it's not quite like any of the other most important sorts of knowledge.
