In a word, games. Practically every kid who learns to program learns it at first to write games. But 8 is young. If your kid isn't already interested in programming at 8, that doesn't seem anything to worry about.

That won’t enable them to have good ideas — it will just enable them to *execute* on the ideas they have. Good ideas come from an outwardly focused inquisitive mind and active listening to the world around you.

That's not true. Being able to execute changes what ideas you have. The reason Zuck built Facebook was that when he noticed Harvard didn't already have its facebook online, he knew, as a programmer, how easy that would be to do.
