Have met several times with undergrads over the past year and every time have come away impressed by how effective and ambitious they seemed. I suspect the popular narrative about college students being spoilt snowflakes is wrong. That kind of popular narrative often is.

Perhaps what's happening is that college students, like so many other parts of society are becoming more polarized: that the spoilt ones are more spoilt than in the past, but the effective ones are also more effective than in the past.

The news media then focuses on the spoilt ones, because they generate ready-made clickbait stories. And meanwhile there's another, much more encouraging story happening quietly in parallel.

or, you know, maybe it's that young people, like old people, are just, well, people. there's slackers and geniuses all around.

Modern media is giving younger people an environment that encourages echo chambers

You should ask these effective & ambitious undergrads what they think of the snowflake narrative. I wonder how many will say “yeah, I’m not like them” vs “the snowflake narrative is bad; safe spaces are important”

I think the number of people driving the bad media narratives is really really small: https://jakeseliger.com/2017/04/24/ninety-five-percent-of-people-are-fine-but-its-that-last-five-percent/ …, but for some reason college admins seem to have lost their ability to deal with them—almost like a dysfunctional immune system.

Semil can you elaborate on "YouTube and Raspberry Pi etc?". Recent undergrad finisher here. Don't quite get it

I teach them. Very few are spoiled. Remember that the ones you think are spoiled may just want something different than you—or are just seeing through your bullshit.
