Have met several times with undergrads over the past year and every time have come away impressed by how effective and ambitious they seemed. I suspect the popular narrative about college students being spoilt snowflakes is wrong. That kind of popular narrative often is.

Perhaps what's happening is that college students, like so many other parts of society are becoming more polarized: that the spoilt ones are more spoilt than in the past, but the effective ones are also more effective than in the past.

The news media then focuses on the spoilt ones, because they generate ready-made clickbait stories. And meanwhile there's another, much more encouraging story happening quietly in parallel.

Only the hard left? I think it’s common across the political spectrum.

feel the same way about the millenials i've met (people in 20s specifically). The ones I meet in professional settings feel like a notch higher than when i was in my 20s and i was in a hyper competitive space

I suspect that the kind of students who would seek you out, or that you would seek out, are not the kind who major in outrage and advocacy, or in Beirut and beer-bongs.

Agreed. Also regarding potential entrepreneurs, they havn’t been kicked in the nose by the real world yet. It is extremely difficult to get away from a salary. But coming out of school: “sure, I’ll work for nothing with the chance to build something awesome and get rich.”

It’s an excellent place for smart/driven people to dream. It would be unintelligent for anyone to dismiss them.

Possible. But also possible that there is a huge selection bias in what types of undergrads meet you. Perhaps the snowflakes are too busy working on their critical theory essays and whatnot.

What's wrong with critical theory essays? Serious Q.
