This is not new. The most persistent people are enabled by online tools being available 24/7, and computers now being in every pocket and always connected.

I still say that society has barely come to grips with our new reality: a computer in every pocket, 24/7, always connected. It's funny that Microsoft's original vision of "a computer on every desktop", which seemed so radical in 1970, was off by .. many orders of magnitude.
