If you have to choose between someone who's a jerk in personal matters but perfectly correct in his opinions, and someone who's upstanding in personal matters but heretical in his opinions, choose the latter.

This is an instance of a rule you already know: that actions speak louder than words. Not all traditional aphorisms are correct. But boy is that one. You can bet on actions speak louder than words forever and never lose.

I believe it is a Jungian idea to take this a step further and infer someone's motivations by looking at the consequences of their actions. Actions themselves can at times be misleading.
