Parenting trick: When one of our kids does something really good (usually but not always at school) we give them the "royal treatment." For the next couple days, all the rules are slightly bent. Stay up late? Candy with breakfast? Ok, since they're getting the royal treatment.

Kids' lives are full of rules, so it's very exciting to them when they're bent. But only, of course, if this is rare.

Refinement: When one kid earns the royal treatment, he gets the right to confer it on his brother too, which he always does. This makes the brother grateful, which further adds to the festive atmosphere, whereas if only one kid got it, well you know kids...
