Parenting trick: When one of our kids does something really good (usually but not always at school) we give them the "royal treatment." For the next couple days, all the rules are slightly bent. Stay up late? Candy with breakfast? Ok, since they're getting the royal treatment.

Who decides the bend? All-candy breakfast? Or just half? Stay up "late" till 3am? Or like 30 mins?
-
Basically they can ask for stuff and the royal treatment is like a finger on the scale. So a little candy with breakfast, or stay up a little later. The rules are bent but not broken.

This last point is great since it encourages helping each other out and eliminates potential for resentment. Thanks!

Do you tell your kids that they are in “royal treatment” mode or just bend things without being explicit?
-
We tell them. That's a big part of it.

Its not so much gratitude as much as it is the expectation that when the other kid earns royal treatment, the favor shall be returned
-
There's sound evolutionary basis for unreciprocal sibling altruism
