I've thought deeply about trying to "fix" healthcare to make it less expensive through open source software and vertically integrated healthcare. (Kaiser + Software). For me, It would have to be a b-corp, not a non-profit for this reason.https://twitter.com/paulg/status/1124254508232663040 …

To fix healthcare in the USA: you have to eliminate the cartels, here's how: 1. cartel Ownership of governance 2. opaque pricing 3. government blank checks 4. incentives for profiteering from chronic illness. If you don’t eliminate all these, you’ve fixed nothing.-

There's one area where tech can help: 1. Opaque pricing. 2. Government Blank Checks --- make it easier for government officials to fire bad staff with tools. Everything else requires a large scale lobby.

I’ve long thought healthcare and education were too big of quagmires for a single startup to solve. However I think it’d be super cool for a co like Google to create a hospital of the future (create own plan too) to incubate new policies and tech.

I think the solution lies in incentives. I switched to Kaiser after years and immediately notice how much more driven they are to prevent me getting sick. That and being vertically integrated.

Yeah, imagine if they had their own stack. That's what I think. I did a sleep study with them which was a piece of gear I took home instead of going to a sleep lab. Imagine if that gear was open source instead of $600. And if the cpap was arduino based, etc.

tech only works for people who can use it. the health care system has to work for people who cannot. there is very little tech that works for people who are not very intelligent, or not very driven, for example.

I don't see why this has to be binary. Systematic change is often catalyzed/ inspired by movements that start outside of the incumbents/governments. A startups can certainly be the instrument for this change in healthcare - I am banking my career on it :)
