The most surprising thing I've learned from being involved with nonprofits is that they are a magnet for sociopaths. One's naive reaction is "Why would nonprofits attract them? Nonprofits do good!" But the defining quality of nonprofits is to make no profit, not to do good.

Interviewing maybe 50 of them at Y Combinator, followed by detailed conversations with the ones we funded about how the nonprofit world works. In other words, roughly the same sort of data I have about startups.

Maybe something in your process of who you accept for interview (as non profits) biases for these kinds of people?

Sample size 1, but I was rejected and I'm not a sociopath.

We’re one they funded. It is true that alongside good, humble people running nonprofits just trying to fight the uphill battle to make the world better, you have narcissists and sociopaths (ahem, Trump Foundation) who think a nonprofit is the perfect vehicle for social glory
