The most surprising thing I've learned from being involved with nonprofits is that they are a magnet for sociopaths. One's naive reaction is "Why would nonprofits attract them? Nonprofits do good!" But the defining quality of nonprofits is to make no profit, not to do good.

Having to make a profit is pretty constraining. You have to satisfy customers or you go out of business. With a nonprofit, there's no intrinsic accountability. If you're a good scammer, the scam need never end. And seeming virtuous is easy when donors already want to believe it.

I'm not saying, obviously, that most nonprofits are run by sociopaths. A disproportionate number of the best people I know run nonprofits. So don't let this phenomenon discourage you from working for or donating to nonprofits. But be aware of it.

Television preachermen who run non-profits sure seem to dress well.

I think it’s also that initial good intentions that get frustrated by bureaucracy can metatisize in a bunch of weird, toxic ways

The state is the biggest non-profit.

Oh, boy. If you take a look at regular companies and startups then you'll see where the real sociopaths are. There are so many companies and people that do sell lies just to earn money... I think nonprofits are pretty safe compared to them

This thread was anecdotal and potentially suggestive of the type of non-profit who might mix with venture capital on the regular. Organizations are as transparent and accountable as their individual members want to be.

This is an interesting thought if an exclusionary one. For instance, startups can be a swell haven for sociopathy. Richly funding a company in a culture where "quirks" are eagerly overlooked if potential is seen has shown a pattern of opportunities for sociopaths to flourish...

It's worse than that. It is NOT the case that a "non profit" "makes no profit" in the traditional sense, it's just renamed to something else, a "fund increase". They still may do all the normal things (generate revenue, etc) it's just not CALLED profit.
