The most surprising thing I've learned from being involved with nonprofits is that they are a magnet for sociopaths. One's naive reaction is "Why would nonprofits attract them? Nonprofits do good!" But the defining quality of nonprofits is to make no profit, not to do good.

I'm not saying, obviously, that most nonprofits are run by sociopaths. A disproportionate number of the best people I know run nonprofits. So don't let this phenomenon discourage you from working for or donating to nonprofits. But be aware of it.

The current debt-based economy is fundamentally flawed anyway though.

Imagine if Sun had gone bankrupt instead of being acquired by Oracle for example.

Would describe “social impact investing” as investing in for-profit companies solving what some might deem societal infarctions, or companies with intrinsic double-bottom lines, like B-corporations?

Spent 15 years in nonprofit sector, worked with hundreds of nonprofits, have sat on multiple nonprofit boards and experienced zero of what you’re saying. Seems unwise to summarily critique a sector that is 1.3M orgs, 10% workforce.

I find this woefully inaccurate. Masochists sure. But I do feel b corps are a better solution in many cases. The tax carrot might need to be rethought

Charities too. An awful but (currently) necessary mechanism to do good. Even though an indictment on the failure of government. What a mess.
-
I have found that charities contribute to the ongoing and increased failure of government in some cases. The public functions end up depending on charity contributions and the contributors see government as something to work around instead of fix.
