The most surprising thing I've learned from being involved with nonprofits is that they are a magnet for sociopaths. One's naive reaction is "Why would nonprofits attract them? Nonprofits do good!" But the defining quality of nonprofits is to make no profit, not to do good.
Having to make a profit is pretty constraining. You have to satisfy customers or you go out of business. With a nonprofit, there's no intrinsic accountability. If you're a good scammer, the scam need never end. And seeming virtuous is easy when donors already want to believe it.
I'm not saying, obviously, that most nonprofits are run by sociopaths. A disproportionate number of the best people I know run nonprofits. So don't let this phenomenon discourage you from working for or donating to nonprofits. But be aware of it.
This would possibly explain why they don't *not* attract them for doing-good reasons, but I'm still curious why you think they do attract sociopaths.

My 2c - generally it’s what sociopaths don’t do that defines them: acting without empathy (for benefit of self). So, taking advantage of others’ heartfelt, purpose-driven labors while gaming the system for praise /attention / money would not bother them one bit.
It makes sense to me. It provides good cover and it provides less oversight. Everyone just assumes your motivations are good from the get go.
