Which instance makes you say that? I thought that's extreme at first but I think you may be right. The authority is not someone, but the crowd and the incentives of likes/retweets/followers. Seems like the person with the least amount of engagement would be the outlier.

Is it though? I'd say it intrinsically discourages obedience. You follow people who add something new. And argue with people who disagree with your own views. I would argue it is more meritocratic than simply being 'obedient to authority'.

You might say influencers are like political leaders who can arbitrarily control their followers? But is that really going on. I'd say the dynamic is the reverse; influencers are at the will of followers. But the demand is not arbitrary and is not by authority.
