Slope matters ?
Most people overestimate the importance of f(x) relative to f'(x). Where you're going matters more than where you are. This is not just a feel-good hippy aphorism. Getting this is why traders and startup founders split the top spots in the Forbes 400.

If f(x) is a mathematical function describing speed, f’(x) would be its rate of change i.e. acceleration. PG is describing the importance of your current situation, versus how quickly your current situation is changing.

By extension, f’’(x) is even more important — how fast is the slope changing / what key inflection point has been crossed — though also much harder to measure with confidence

How does this mental model map to different cultural contexts, such as SF vs Italy wrt economic mobility? Perhaps people mistake what arena they are playing in depending on what context they are generally exposed to (mental model lagging reality, generally speaking).
