i always tell my kids things are inappropriate, mostly because i am too tired to detailedly describe to them why exactly in polite society one does not do that

I just tell them that social rules are arbitrary. Interestingly, this doesn't cause them to say "well, I won't obey them then." Perhaps because their whole lives, to them, seem to consist of obeying arbitrary rules.

In fact, if anything it makes them more willing to obey social rules. They think to themselves, ok, this is like having to to line up in alphabetical order, write in cursive, wear uniforms at school, etc.
