Being (socially) humble is just countersignaling. Boasting is seen as an indicator of the need to compensate for the lack of self-assurance; understatement is the way of someone who does not need public approval.

Boasting that gets noticed seems like a poor signal. Successful exaggeration of importance (what Hardy seems to be saying) means the listener doesn't realize it.

My experience is somewhat different: I’ve found that corporate America (including startups) reward people who are boastful, while in Asia this behavior is discouraged.
