What @elonmusk has done that rival automakers missed/didn't have the means to combat was turn @Tesla into a lifestyle!
It doesn't just sell someone a car, it sells them an image, a relationship & a feeling that they are tapping into the future!

What other companies do this better than Tesla?

But you can't deny the Cult of Elon Musk+SpaceX+Tesla that is driving each of them in one or another way.

I don't know about other people, but zero of my friends that own Teslas bought them because Elon is the CEO.

The best marketing is word of mouth and the best products speak for themselves. I haven't seen a 'mainstream' Tesla Ad... Tesla's brand image has greatly helped the stock price though, if not consumer buying decisions.

Teslas are going to cause lots more accidents because 2 things: You can hack your way into controling the car and humans have been trained to use car noises to judge speed. It's not safe.

And every other person around them has one so I better get one myself?

On the contrary, I feel: 1. Tesla customers love the brand & feel connected with the vision & brand - how else would you justify the price along with the sheer scale of pre-orders on a vehicle with a delivery date that is undecided. (1/4)

2. It's something similar to what Apple has done. There are going to be very few people who purchase the $1000 iPhone because of its superior camera, processor, battery or other features. Vast chunk buy it because it's APPLE! (2/4)

It’s complicated. Most people I know bought an iPhone because they believe it to be a great phone — so it’s an assumption about unspecified things (battery, camera, etc) based on reputation. Which category are they in?

3. As
@kunal puts it - it's a classic case of UBP v/s USP - Tesla has created a unique brag-worthy proposition wherein those who have the product try to get you to move away from other alternatives creating a fan-club that sells the brand.
